   7 The bdb.DB0 file contains the Backup Database, which
   8 records configuration information used by the AFS Backup System along with
   9 cross-indexed records of the tapes created and volumes dumped using the Backup
  10 System commands.

  12 The bdb.DBSYS1 file is a log file in which the Backup
  13 Server (B<buserver> process) logs each database operation before
  14 performing it. When an operation is interrupted, the Backup Server
  15 replays the log to complete the operation.

  17 Both files are in binary format and reside in the /usr/afs/db
  18 directory on each database server machine that runs the Backup Server.
  19 When the Backup Server starts or restarts on a given machine, it establishes a
  20 connection with its peers and verifies that its copy of the
  21 B<bdb.DB0> file matches the copy on the other database server
  22 machines. If not, the Backup Servers use AFS's distributed
  23 database technology, Ubik, to distribute to all of the machines the copy of
  24 the database with the highest version number.

  26 Use the commands in the backup suite to administer the Backup
  27 Database. It is advisable to create a backup copy of the
  28 B<bdb.DB0> file on tape on a regular basis, using the UNIX
  29 B<tar> command or another local disk backup utility.
