  22 <P>This guide describes the concepts and procedures that an
  23 AFS<SUP>(R)</SUP> system administrator needs to know. It assumes
  24 familiarity with UNIX<SUP>(R)</SUP> administration, but no previous
  25 knowledge of AFS.
  26 <P>This document describes AFS commands in the context of specific
  27 tasks. Thus, it does not describe all commands in detail. Refer
  28 to the <I>AFS Administration Reference</I> for detailed command
  29 descriptions.

  46 with a discussion of concepts specific to that task, followed by step-by-step
  47 instructions for performing the task. The instructions are as specific
  48 as has been judged practical. If two related procedures differ from one
  49 another in important details, separate sets of instructions are usually
  50 provided.

  70 <P><I>AFS Administration Reference</I>
  71 <P>This reference manual details the syntax and effect of each AFS
  72 command. It is intended for the experienced AFS administrator,
  73 programmer, or user.
  74 <P>The <I>AFS Administration Reference</I> lists AFS files and commands in
  75 alphabetical order. The reference page for each command specifies its
  76 syntax, including the acceptable aliases and abbreviations. It then
  77 describes the command&#39;s function, arguments, and output if any.
  78 Examples and a list of related commands are provided, as are warnings where
  79 appropriate.
  80 <P>This manual complements the <I>AFS Administration Guide</I>&#58; it
  81 does not include procedural information, but describes commands in more detail
  82 than the <I>AFS Administration Guide</I>.
  83 <P><I>AFS Quick Beginnings</I>
  84 <P>This guide provides instructions for installing AFS server and client
  85 machines. It is assumed that the installer is an experienced UNIX<SUP>
  86 (R)</SUP> system administrator.
  87 <P>For predictable performance, machines must be installed and configured in
  88 accordance with the instructions in this guide.
  89 <P><I>AFS Release Notes</I>
  90 <P>This document provides information specific to each release of AFS, such as
  91 a list of new features and commands, a list of requirements and limitations,
  92 and instructions for upgrading server and client machines.
  93 <P><I>AFS User Guide</I>
  94 <P>This guide presents the basic concepts and procedures necessary for using
  95 AFS effectively. It assumes that the reader has some experience with
  96 UNIX, but does not require familiarity with networking or AFS.
  97 <P>The guide explains how to perform basic functions, including
  98 authenticating, changing a password, protecting AFS data, creating groups, and
  99 troubleshooting. It provides illustrative examples for each function
 100 and describes some of the differences between the UNIX file system and
 101 AFS.
 102 <HR><H2><A NAME="HDRTYPO_CONV" HREF="auagd002.htm#ToC_8">Typographical Conventions</A></H2>

 107 definitions, examples, and running text. Names of directories, files,
 108 machines, partitions, volumes, and users also appear in <B>bold

 110 <P><LI>Variable information appears in <I>italic type</I>. This
 111 includes user-supplied information on command lines and the parts of prompts
 112 that differ depending on who issues the command. New terms also appear
 113 in <I>italic type</I>.
 114 <P><LI>Examples of screen output and file contents appear in <TT>monospace
 115 type</TT>.

 117 <P>In addition, the following symbols appear in command syntax definitions,
 118 both in the documentation and in AFS online help statements. When
 119 issuing a command, do not type these symbols.

 121 <P><LI>Square brackets <B>[   ]</B> surround optional items.
 122 <P><LI>Angle brackets <B>&lt;   ></B> surround user-supplied values in AFS
 123 commands.
 124 <P><LI>A superscripted plus sign <B>+</B> follows an argument that accepts
 125 more than one value.
 126 <P><LI>The percent sign <TT>%</TT> represents the regular command shell
 127 prompt. Some operating systems possibly use a different character for
 128 this prompt.
 129 <P><LI>The number sign <TT>#</TT> represents the command shell prompt for the
 130 local superuser <B>root</B>. Some operating systems possibly use a
 131 different character for this prompt.
 132 <P><LI>The pipe symbol <B> |</B> in a command syntax statement separates
 133 mutually exclusive values for an argument.
