1 Instead of mounting the home cell's root.afs volume at the AFS mount point (typically /afs) a fake root is constructed from information available in the client's [[CellServDB]].

5 A similar feature exists in the Windows clients, known as the [[FreelanceClient]] feature. The technical details are available [here](https://lists.openafs.org/pipermail/openafs-devel/2001-October/001927.html).

9 On Unix this option is enabled by specifying `-dynroot` on the `afsd` command line.
11 On Windows add this DWORD to the registry: `HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TransarcAFSDaemon\Parameters\FreelanceClient=1` and create the file `%SystemRoot%\afsdns.ini` containing:
13 [AFS Domain Name Servers]
16 Then restart "IBM AFS Client" and the cells you touch get added to `%SystemRoot%\afs_freelance.ini`.
