  23 <P>Traces Salvager operations
  24 <P><STRONG>Description</STRONG>
  25 <P>The <B>SalvageLog</B> file records a trace of Salvager
  26 (<B>salvager</B> process) operations on the local machine and describes
  27 any error conditions it encounters.
  28 <P>If the <B>SalvageLog</B> file does not already exist in the
  29 <B>/usr/afs/logs</B> directory when the Salvager starts, the process
  30 creates it and writes initial start-up messages to it. If there is an
  31 existing file, the Salvager renames is to <B>SalvageLog.old</B>,
  32 overwriting the existing <B>SalvageLog.old</B> file if it
  33 exists.
  34 <P>The file is in ASCII format. Administrators listed in the
  35 <B>/usr/afs/etc/UserList</B> file can use the <B>bos getlog</B>
  36 command to display its contents. Alternatively, log onto the file
  37 server machine and use a text editor or a file display command such as the
  38 UNIX <B>cat</B> command. By default, the mode bits on the
  39 <B>SalvageLog</B> file grant the required <B>r</B> (<B>read</B>)
  40 permission to all users.
  41 <P>The Salvager records operations only as it completes them, and cannot
  42 recover from failures by reviewing the file. The log contents are
  43 useful for administrative evaluation of process failures and other
  44 problems.
