  18 <P>This document uses the following typographical
  19 conventions:
  20 <UL>
  21 <P><LI>Command and option names appear in <B>bold type</B> in syntax
  22 definitions, examples, and running text. Names of directories, files,
  23 machines, partitions, volumes, and users also appear in <B>bold
  24 type</B>.
  25 <P><LI>Variable information appears in <I>italic type</I>. This
  26 includes user-supplied information on command lines and the parts of prompts
  27 that differ depending on who issues the command. New terms also appear
  28 in <I>italic type</I>.
  29 <P><LI>Examples of screen output and file contents appear in <TT>monospace
  30 type</TT>.

  32 <P>In addition, the following symbols appear in command syntax definitions,
  33 both in the documentation and in AFS online help statements. When
  34 issuing a command, do not type these symbols.
  35 <UL>
  36 <P><LI>Square brackets <B>[   ]</B> surround optional items.
  37 <P><LI>Angle brackets <B>&lt;   ></B> surround user-supplied values in AFS
  38 commands.
  39 <P><LI>A superscripted plus sign <B>+</B> follows an argument that accepts
  40 more than one value.
  41 <P><LI>The percent sign <TT>%</TT> represents the regular command shell
  42 prompt. Some operating systems possibly use a different character for
  43 this prompt.
  44 <P><LI>The number sign <TT>#</TT> represents the command shell prompt for the
  45 local superuser <B>root</B>. Some operating systems possibly use a
  46 different character for this prompt.
  47 <P><LI>The pipe symbol <B> |</B> in a command syntax statement separates
  48 mutually exclusive values for an argument.
