  23 <P>Traces Backup Server operations
  24 <P><STRONG>Description</STRONG>
  25 <P>The <B>BackupLog</B> file records a trace of Backup Server
  26 (<B>buserver</B> process) operations on the local machine and describes
  27 any error conditions it encounters.
  28 <P>If the <B>BackupLog</B> file does not already exist in the
  29 <B>/usr/afs/logs</B> directory when the Backup Server starts, the server
  30 process creates it and writes initial start-up messages to it. If there
  31 is an existing file, the Backup Server renames it to
  32 <B>BackupLog.old</B>, overwriting the existing
  33 <B>BackupLog.old</B> file if it exists.
  34 <P>The file is in ASCII format. Administrators listed in the
  35 <B>/usr/afs/etc/UserList</B> file can use the <B>bos getlog</B>
  36 command to display its contents. Alternatively, log on to the machine
  37 and use a text editor or a file display command such as the UNIX
  38 <B>cat</B> command. By default, the mode bits on the
  39 <B>BackupLog</B> file grant the required <B>r</B> (<B>read</B>)
  40 permission to all users.
  41 <P>The Backup Server records operations only as it completes them, and so
  42 cannot recover from failures by reviewing the file. The log contents
  43 are useful for administrative evaluation of process failures and other
  44 problems.
