  19 <P><STRONG>Purpose</STRONG>
  20 <P>Logs error messages from the Tape Coordinator process
  21 <P><STRONG>Description</STRONG>
  22 <P>The <B>TE_</B><VAR>device_name</VAR> file logs error messages generated
  23 by the Backup System Tape Coordinator (<B>butc</B> process) that controls
  24 the tape device or backup data file indicated by <VAR>device_name</VAR>.
  25 <P>As the Tape Coordinator initializes, it creates the file in ASCII format in
  26 the <B>/usr/afs/backup</B> directory. If there is an existing file,
  27 the Tape Coordinator renames it to
  28 <B>TE_</B><VAR>device_name</VAR><B>.old</B>, overwriting the
  29 existing <B>TE_</B><VAR>device_name</VAR><B>.old</B> file if it
  30 exists.
  31 <P>For a tape device, the Tape Coordinator derives the variable
  32 <VAR>device_name</VAR> portion of the filename from the device pathname listed
  33 in the local <B>/usr/afs/backup/tapeconfig</B> file, by stripping off the
  34 initial <B>/dev/</B> string and replacing any other slashes in the name
  35 with underscores. For example, the filename for a device called
  36 <B>/dev/rmt/4m</B> is <B>TE_rmt_4m</B>. Similarly, for a backup
  37 data file the Tape Coordinator strips off the initial slash (/) and replaces
  38 any other slashes in the name with underscores. For example, the
  39 filename for a backup data file called <B>/var/tmp/FILE</B> is
  40 <B>TE_var_tmp_FILE</B>.
  41 <P>The messages in the file describe the error and warning conditions the Tape
  42 Coordinator encounters as it operates. For instance, a message can list
  43 the volumes that are inaccessible during a dump operation, or warn that the
  44 Tape Coordinator is overwriting a tape or backup data file. The
  45 messages also appear in the <B>/usr/afs/backup/TL_</B><VAR>device_name</VAR>
  46 file, which traces most of the Tape Coordinator's actions.
