  25 <P>Defines client machine's cell membership
  26 <P><STRONG>Description</STRONG>
  27 <P>The client version of the <B>ThisCell</B> file defines the complete
  28 Internet domain-style name (for example, <B>abc.com</B>) of the
  29 cell to which the local client machine belongs. It must reside in the
  30 <B>/usr/vice/etc</B> directory on every AFS client machine. To
  31 change a client machine's cell membership, edit the file and reboot the
  32 machine.
  33 <P>The file is in ASCII format and contains a character string on a single
  34 line. The <I>IBM AFS Quick Beginnings</I> instructs the
  35 administrator to create it during the installation of each client
  36 machine.
  37 <P>The client machine's cell membership determines three defaults
  38 important to its functioning:
  39 <UL>
  40 <P><LI>The cell in which the machine's users authenticate by default.
  41 The effect is two-fold:
  42 <UL>
  43 <P><LI>The AFS-modified login utilities and the <B>klog</B> command
  44 interpreter contact an Authentication Server in the cell named in the
  45 <B>ThisCell</B> file (unless <B>-cell</B> argument to the
  46 <B>klog</B> command specifies an alternate cell).
  47 <P><LI>The command interpreters combine the cell name with the password that the
  48 user provides, generating an encryption key from the combination. For
  49 authentication to succeed, both the cell name and password must match the ones
  50 used to generate the user's encryption key stored in the Authentication
  51 Database.

  53 <P><LI>The cell the Cache Manager considers its local, or home, cell. By
  54 default, the Cache Manager allows programs that reside in its home cell to run
  55 with setuid permission, but not programs from foreign cells. For more
  56 details, see the <B>fs getcellstatus</B> and <B>fs setcell</B>
  57 reference pages.
  58 <P><LI>Which AFS server processes the local AFS command interpreters contact by
  59 default as they execute commands issued on the machine.

  61 <P>The client version of the <B>ThisCell</B> file is distinct from the
  62 server version, which resides in the <B>/usr/afs/etc</B> directory on each
  63 AFS server machine. If a server machine also runs as a client, it is
  64 acceptable for the server and client versions of the file on the same machine
  65 to name different cells. However, the behavior that results from this
  66 configuration can be more confusing than useful.
