19
Purpose
20
Records output from the fms command
21
Description
22
The fms.log file records the output generated by the
23 fms command. The output includes two numbers that can appear
24 in a tape device's entry in the /usr/afs/backup/tapeconfig
25 file on the Tape Coordinator machine to which the tape device is
28

The capacity in bytes of the tape in the device
29

The size in bytes of the end-of-file (EOF) marks (often referred to simply
30 as filemarks) that the tape device writes
32
When transferring the numbers recorded in this file to the
33 tapeconfig file, adjust them as specified on the reference page for
34 the tapeconfig file, to improve Tape Coordinator performance during
36
If the fms.log file does not already exist in the current
37 working directory, the fms command interpreter creates it.
38 In this case, the directory's mode bits must grant the rwx
39 (read, write, and execute) permissions to the
40 issuer of the command. If there is an existing file, the command
41 interpreter overwrites it, so the file's mode bits need to grant only the
42 w permission to the issuer of the fms command.
43 The fms command interpreter also writes similar information to the
44 standard output stream as it runs.
45
The file is in ASCII format. To display its contents, log onto the
46 client machine and use a text editor or a file display command such as the
47 UNIX cat command. By default, the mode bits on the
48 fms.log file grant the required r permission only
49 to the owner (which is the local superuser root by default).
50
Output
51
The first few lines of the file provide a simple trace of the
52 fms command interpreter's actions, specifying (for example)
53 how many blocks it wrote on the tape. The final two lines in the file
54 specify tape capacity and filemark size in bytes, using the following
56
Tape capacity is <VAR>tape_size</VAR> bytes
57 File marks are <VAR>filemark_size</VAR> bytes
60
Examples
61
The following example of the fms.log file specifies that
62 the tape used during the execution of the fms command had a
63 capacity of 2,136,604,672 bytes, and that the tape device writes filemarks of
65
fms test started
67 Tape capacity is 2136604672 bytes
68 File marks are 1910220 bytes
