  20 <P>Introduction to AFS files
  21 <P><STRONG>Description</STRONG>
  22 <P>A number of files must reside on the local disk of AFS server and client
  23 machines. They belong to the following general categories&#58;
  24 <UL>
  25 <P><LI><I>Configuration files</I> define configuration parameters for
  26 specific server and kernel processes such as the Backup System Tape
  27 Coordinator or the Cache Manager
  28 <P><LI><I>Administrative files</I> list information used in administration of
  29 server machines, such as a list of privileged users or server encryption keys
  30 <P><LI><I>Cache-related files</I> contain cached data or information about
  31 cached data, on client machines
  32 <P><LI><I>Log files</I> contain tracing messages about the operation of a
  33 specific process
  34 <P><LI><I>Database files</I> contain database records used to administer the
  35 AFS cell
  36 <P><LI><I>Controller files</I> control the behavior of a process
  37 <P><LI><I>Volume header files</I> represent AFS volumes on server partitions
  38 </UL>
  39 <P>For a description of the format and contents of each file, see its
  40 reference page.
  41 <P><B>Note for Windows users&#58;</B> Some files described in this
  42 document possibly do not exist on machines that run a Windows operating
  43 system. Also, Windows uses a backslash
  44 (&nbsp;<B>\</B>&nbsp;) rather than a forward slash
  45 (&nbsp;<B>/</B>&nbsp;) to separate the elements in a
  46 pathname.
